Description
No. 1 Great Faringdon in Bromsgrove is a former draper's shop from the mid to late 19th century. The building has a stucco front and is constructed of brick, standing two stories tall with a gable end facing the street and a slate roof. It features a three-window front with openings set in full-height recessed panels. There are moulded strings at the first floor, where large casement windows are framed by heavily moulded surrounds, with flat cornices on the outer windows and a central segmental pediment. The sills are supported by brackets and have inset panels beneath them.
On the ground floor, there are flanking plate glass shop windows and a central set of glazed double doors. The interior retains its former shop layout, featuring a galleried space with an oblong top-light above a coved ceiling. Ornamental cast iron railings line the gallery front, and there is a curving staircase with moulded mahogany handrails. The sides of the ground floor include original mahogany shelving, with banks of pigeon-holes and drawers alternating with open shelves, along with mahogany counters.
