Description

Ferndale School is an early 19th-century house, originally built in the early to mid-18th century and later stuccoed. It has a low-pitched slate roof and end wall stacks. The house features angle quoins and a two-window front with 16-pane sash windows. The central door consists of 10 fielded panels, with the top four panels glazed, and there is evidence of a formerly segmental-headed porch within a plastered surround. On the south side, two sash windows are set within bead-moulded raised stone surrounds and retain their glazing bars. Inside, a winding staircase rises around an octagonal newel, featuring a moulded handrail (formerly with twisted balusters); the panelling at dado level has been covered. On the first floor, an archway is framed by fluted pilaster jambs, a moulded arch, and a keystone. The south-facing room on the first floor features fielded panelling and a moulded cornice. Iron railings are set upon a low wall in front of the property.
