Description
This icehouse, built around 1757, is located approximately 270 metres northeast of Buckland House. It was likely designed by John Wood the Younger for Sir Robert Throckmorton. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble, featuring vermiculated rustication on the porch, and has a thatched roof over the icehouse with stone slates covering the porch. The icehouse is circular in shape, with a square porch attached to the front, showcasing a picturesque style. The porch has a pediment at the front and features entrances on each of its three sides, each with semi-circular arches connected by an ashlar string course at the impost level. The conical roof of the icehouse extends forward, topped with a small gablet above the gabled porch roof. Inside, the portico is rendered, and the icehouse is accessed through a 20th-century plank door set in a semi-circular trick arch. This icehouse is an excellent example of Georgian architecture in the Picturesque style.
