Description

The building is a former hotel, originally dating to ancient origins, with significant alterations from the 18th century. The left-hand section is three storeys and an attic, built of painted brick with a slate roof, half-hipped to the left, and includes one dormer with a casement window lacking glazing bars. The rendered parapet sits above two windows on the second floor with flush frames, flat arches, and no glazing bars. Modern canted bay windows are visible on the first and ground floors.

The right-hand section dates to the early 18th century and comprises three storeys and attics. It features a slate roof with one dormer featuring a casement lacking glazing bars, a modern parapet, and a dentil cornice. The facade is of painted brick with brick rusticated quoins. There are three windows with flush frames, double lintel sashes with glazing bars, and gauged brick arches. Modern ground floor windows and a double door are also present.

The building was formerly known as 'The Antelope Inn' and was mentioned in Pepy's Diary under June 9 1688. Previously it was known as New Inn, a guest house for visitors to the Abbey. It forms a group with Nos. 14 to 21 Market Place.
