Description
The gateway and flanking walls to St Mary's Convent, located from Challow Road, were likely built in 1855 or 1856 by the architect G E Street. The materials used include roughly dressed and ashlar limestone blocks.
The exterior features a pointed-arch ashlar entrance that is supported by buttresses at both the front and rear, with stone modillions positioned above. The entrance is topped with a gable that includes kneelers, and there are ashlar crucifixes set into the apex on both sides. The gateway has a segmental, two-leaf iron gate and is flanked by iron guardrails that feature pierced quatrefoils and spikes. Additionally, there are stepped flanking walls attached to the entrance, which have ashlar coping.
