Description
This barn, now used as a gymnasium, is located approximately 20 meters northeast of the Manor Preparatory School. It dates back to the 15th century and was originally built for Abingdon Abbey. The structure is made of coursed limestone rubble featuring puplog holes and dressed quoins, topped with an old tile roof that has stone coping and carved finials. The barn has a five-bay plan, with a threshing floor situated in the second bay from the left. The entries have been blocked by a 20th-century door and glazing, and there is a smaller blocked entry in the second bay from the right, which has a timber lintel.
Inside, the barn features a five-bay roof with original windbraces located at the rear right. There are 20th-century lateral iron stanchions and transverse bolted plates for strengthening. The roof includes raised crucks with arch-braced lower collars and upper collars that are halved into blades. A ridge purlin is laid on a solid yoke, and the trenched side purlins have tabled scarf joints. In the 15th century, Abingdon Abbey leased the site to lay tenants.
