Description
The Monument to Prince Albert, located in Albert Park, was designed by John Gibbs of Oxford and completed in 1864. The monument features a statue of Prince Albert dressed in Elizabethan costume, holding a scroll. This statue stands on a hexagonal ashlar column that is intricately carved with shields and flowers in medallions. The column is flanked by four sandstone columns topped with foliated capitals, and supported by lions holding shields. The entire structure rests on a plinth that includes a frieze and cornice adorned with carved medallions depicting the Queen's head and the royal monogram. Access to the monument is provided by four steps.
