Description

This police station was built in 1863 and extended around 1870. It is constructed from stone rubble with red brick dressings, a stone string course, and a slate hipped roof. The building has a long, rectangular plan, with a splayed corner on the north-east side and a three-bay extension to the south-east. The front has seven bays, and the addition has three. The windows are 16-pane sashes with flat brick arches, brick jambs, and stone sills. The central doorway features a similar brick arch and jamb, with a rectangular overlight containing glazing bars and a flush-panelled door. A stone string course runs along the first floor, inscribed at the centre with "COUNTY POLICE STATION." The extension to the left has a lower string course and eaves. At the rear, the first floor has sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has smaller cell windows with iron bars. A single-storey addition is on the right rear, and the extension to the right has a brick rear wall and a gabled wing. Internally, the original cells have been preserved, including their WCs.
