Description
A house, now a school, was largely built in the mid-18th century, with a front range added around 1840 for the Aldworth family. The construction uses coursed dressed limestone, with a gabled roof covered in slate, along with stone ridge and end stacks. The building follows a double-depth plan and is designed in a Jacobean Revival style. It has two storeys and a four-window front, with projecting outer bays. Stone-mullioned windows with two lights are positioned above a central Tudor-arched doorway. The doorway has a panelled door, recessed within a moulded surround with stained glass windows. The outer bays feature Dutch gables and two-storey canted bay windows with stone-mullioned and transomed windows. A mid-18th century wing extends to the rear, left side of the main building, and was remodelled and extended in the 19th and 20th centuries. This wing is constructed from similar materials and incorporates eight-pane sashes. The interior, mainly from the mid-19th century, includes mid-19th century bolection-panelled doors and shutters. A mid-18th century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters is located to the rear of the hall, leading to a panelled room. The property is one of two villas in Frilford built for the Aldworths around 1840. The Dutch gables with their mullioned and transomed bay windows are reminiscent of designs by J.C. Loundon for his “Beau Ideal Villa”.
