Description

Gratwick Barn and the attached stable, located approximately 20 meters east of Manor Farmhouse, date back to the early 18th century. The barn features coursed limestone rubble on the front and side walls, with weatherboarding over a light timber frame set on a coursed limestone rubble plinth at the rear, topped by an asbestos sheet roof. It has a four-bay plan and full-height openings to the threshing floor in the second bay from the left and in the bay on the right. The barn has a gabled roof and an interior that includes a four-bay queen-post roof with butt purlins and wind braces to the upper purlins. Each tie-beam is arch-braced at the front to a vertical post, which is tenoned into a timber corbel, while at the rear, each tie-beam is arch-braced to a jowled post.

The attached stable on the right has the inscription JB/1787 on a beam. It features coursed limestone rubble walling, weatherboarding over a light timber frame on the rear left wall, and a stone slate roof, with a mid-20th century tile roof on part of the front and the right side. The gabled front wall, dating from around 1860, has timber lintels over the stable door, loft door, and an adjoining shutter. The rear gable wall contains the original plank stable door with a large Norfolk latch, a plank loft door, and a 20th-century window. Inside, there are chamfered beams and plain joists throughout, with a tack room at the front that retains original harness pegs and a ladder to the left. The stable has a six-bay collar-truss roof with staggered butt purlins and is noted as a dated example.
