Description

The Old Mill House is a mill and miller's house dating from the mid-18th century, with a remodel around 1930. It features random bond brick construction, except for coursed limestone rubble with brick dressings to the right of the front door. The building has an old tiled roof and brick stacks, forming an L-plan structure with two storeys and a five-window range.

A gabled porch from around 1930 is positioned in front of the original doorway. The windows display irregular fenestration, with segmental brick arches over two- and three-light leaded casements to the left of the door, and a two-light cross window with leaded casements to the right. This right window replaced a door that was accessed by limestone steps, which still run along the front walls. There are three blocked window openings with limestone ashlar quoins beneath the eaves on the right side. The roof has tile-clad gabled dormers with two-light leaded casements and dentilled eaves on the left wing.

The right wall of the wing extending from the front left wall has a four-window range with segmental arches over two- and three-light leaded casements on the right side and timber lintels over two two-light leaded casements on the left side. The rear features a semi-circular arch over a blocked housing for the mill wheel shaft, segmental arches over two two-light cross windows, and twin 20th-century gabled dormers. A gabled brick and tiled wing at the rear left was remodelled and extended in the late 20th century.

Inside, the first floor was remodelled around 1930 and later when the entire mill building to the right of the door was updated. A 17th-century moulded bressumer from another house has been fitted into the remodelled gable wall fireplace. The interior includes quarry tile flooring, four- and six-panelled doors in moulded architraves, and a closed string quarter-turn staircase with landing opposite the front door, featuring mid-18th-century barley sugar balusters.
