Description

This chest tomb, dating from the late 17th century, is located approximately 20 meters northeast of the chancel of the Church of St. Michael on Cumnor High Street. It is made of limestone and features a splayed plinth and a cyma-moulded cornice. Slate lozenges are set into the sides, which bear inscriptions. The tomb commemorates Lieutenant William Godfry, who died in 1694 and was a devoted Royalist. One inscription reads, "Here lyeth ye Body of Lieutenant Willi/am Godfry who faithfully served King Charles ye lst/from Edgehill Fight/to ye end of ye/unhappy/wars."
