Description

Downside is a house built in the mid 17th century, with a garden front added in the mid 18th century. The central bay is constructed of red brick, while the left and right sides are made of grey brick with red brick dressings. The roof is covered with old plain tiles, featuring a brick stack at the left end and a ridge stack to the right of the center.

The main front faces the gardens and is a two-storey, three-bay range, with the center bay projecting forward. There is a six-panel door to the right of the center, topped by a gabled plain-tile hood. To the left and right, there are segmental-headed three-light casements with segmental brick heads. The center features two-light and three-light wood mullion and transom windows. On the first floor, there are segmental-headed three-light casements to the left and right, also with segmental brick heads, and a wood thermal window in the center. A brick dentil course runs along the eaves, and the center bay has a pediment gable with stone acorn finials at the ends.

The entrance front at the rear is rendered, likely over timber framing, and features a first floor that jetties out. The roof has three cross-gables. The interior has not been inspected. There is a 20th-century addition to the left and a 19th-century addition to the right, which has undergone 20th-century alterations. The 19th-century garden wall is made of stone with brick dressings and has 20th-century brick coping; it stands approximately 2 meters high and is 30 meters long.
