Description
This is an implement shed built in the 18th century, likely in the second half, with a 19th-century addition. It has a timber frame set on a rubblestone plinth and features horizontal board cladding, with the 18th-century section using very wide boards and cover strips over the joints. The roof is thatched and the structure is one storey with four bays, where the right-hand bay is an addition and is partitioned off from the rest. The front and left sides are open, supported by timber posts on brick plinths with straight braces connecting to the wall plate and tie-beams. The right bay has a double board door, and the roof is hipped at the left end. Inside, the wall posts are sharply jowelled and display chiselled carpenter's marks. The roof features collared queen-post trusses with crudely-cut through purlins, along with log-like rafters and a ridge-piece. Examples of 18th-century implement sheds are rare, and this one is particularly well-crafted.
