Description

West Hanney House, originally a rectory and now a house, dates from 1727, as noted on a sundial on the south front. The building is constructed of red brick with flared headers and red brick dressings, topped with a slate mansard roof. It features brick lateral stacks and end stacks and is designed in the Baroque style.

The house is three stories high with a two-bay center and two-bay ranges of two stories and an attic on either side. The main facade facing the garden has a symmetrical arrangement of windows in a 2:2:2 pattern, with the center two bays projecting forward. To the right of the center, there is a sash door with an overlight, framed by a segmental brick head that includes a keystone. The windows are segmental-headed 12-pane unhorned sashes, also with segmental brick heads featuring keystones and shaped brick aprons, except for a false window on the third floor to the right of the center. A flat brick band runs between the ground and first floors, and another flat brick band is located at the base of the parapet, which is panelled and sweeps up to the center two bays.

The right return of the building has a three-story, two-bay center, with single-bay ranges of two stories and an attic on either side, arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. The fenestration is regular, with most being false windows, and end stacks flank the center two bays.

Inside, the house features an 18th-century dog leg staircase and panelled rooms. There are also attached archways on the left and right, each topped with open pediments.
