Description
This is a late 18th-century country house, later remodelled around 1800 for George Elwes, with subsequent alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is now used as a college.
The house is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a Welsh slate roof and ashlar ridge stacks. The original plan was rectangular, with a double-depth layout accessed from the east. Modern extensions have been added to the south-east and south-west.
The symmetrical, two-storey principal elevation faces east and is seven windows wide, with three windows to a central projecting bay. The central entrance has a segmental pediment supported by consoles above a glazed door with a decorative overlight. Window openings have stone lintels over six-pane sashes. A single oculus is set into the parapet at the south end. The parapet, including the central pediment on the principal elevation, was altered after 1806. The south elevation features a similar central bay, flanked by large tripartite windows; the ground-floor windows are accentuated by Tuscan pilasters. Four oculi are set into the parapet of this elevation. The north and west elevations, both six windows wide, have windows and string courses set at a higher level than those on the east and south. The second and fourth bays project, and contain tripartite windows; the lower windows have triangular pediments and Tuscan pilasters.
Internally, notable features include early 19th-century panelled doors and doorcases, and marble fireplaces. An early 18th-century dog-leg staircase, with an S-shaped wrought-iron balustrade (installed in 1938), is located to the left of the entrance hall. A room to the rear left features Graeco-Egyptian style plaster panels depicting griffins flanking urns, above a blocked door. There are two panelled doors flanking a segmental-arched alcove with consoles. The room also has an Egyptian-style fireplace and cornice. The drawing room has a chimneypiece with panelled pilasters and palmette and anthemion capitals.
