Description
Church Farmhouse and Church Farm Cottage are located approximately 100 meters southwest of The Manor Preparatory School. The farmhouse, which is now divided into two dwellings, has a 16th-century rear wing, while the front range and stair-turret were built around 1720 to 1740. The building was remodeled in the late 19th and 20th centuries.
The front of the farmhouse features colourwashed limestone rubble with squared quoins and a 20th-century tile roof that is half-hipped to the left. There is a brick gable end stack on the right and a lateral stack at the rear, which is finished in brick. The structure is L-shaped with a rear right wing and consists of two storeys and an attic, presenting a five-window range. The central door, which dates from the late 19th century, has a segmental brick arch above it, while there is also a late 19th-century door to the left and late 19th-century two-light casements with flat brick arches above similar casements on the first floor. Additional features include a raised brick storey band, a coved wood cornice, and three 20th-century roof dormers.
The early 18th-century stair-turret, which is built over part of the 16th-century rear wing, is timber-framed with two panels deep, arch braces, and brick infill. It has an old tile roof that is hipped at the rear of the stone end stack and also covers the right-angled 18th-century service range, known as the brewhouse, which is made of colourwashed limestone rubble. Inside, the farmhouse boasts a fine early 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a landing, featuring turned balusters on a closed string, and is noted for its stone fireplaces. The interior of Church Farm Cottage, which dates from the 16th century, was not inspected but is likely to be of interest.
