Description

Twickenham House is a mid-18th century building located on the south-east side of East Street, St Helen. It is a two-storey structure with cellars and attics, and is of group value. The building is constructed of brick with a stone-capped parapet and a tile roof punctuated by four hipped dormers. Two chimneys are present. Architectural details include a modillion cornice and a modillion cornice to a central pediment. The fenestration pattern is a 1:3:1 arrangement of windows, each with flat brick arches and double-hung sashes containing glazing bars. A band runs horizontally between the storeys and above the cellars at ground floor level. The main entrance features a six-panelled, carved door with matching carved ingoes, set within a doorway framed by three-quarter Roman Ionic columns, a dentil cornice, and a pediment. A female mask is carved into the frieze, flanked by swags. Five stone steps lead up to the entrance. Twickenham House is part of a group with Nos. 2 to 60 (even) on East Street.
