Description

WYTHAM SP4708 10/179 Wytham Abbey, walls and attached stables approx. 15m. NE together with gatepiers and gates GV II Walls, gateplers amd gate and attached stables. Early C19. Low wall across front of Wytham Abbey (q.v.): of coursed dressed limestone with stepped stone coping and gabled ashlar piers and iron gates: approx. 50m. long and curves away past pier at south end. North end attached to tall octagonal gatepier and tall wall to east of coursed limestone rubble with crenellated ashlar parapet which is continued over gable end, with reset early C14 two-light window, of C18 stable block remodelled in early C19. Approx. 40m. long and L-shaped: lower arm, approx. 20m. long and attached to Church of All Saints (q.v.), incorporates C15 moulded stone doorway from Cumnor Place (demolished 1811). Included for group value.
