Description

BECKLEY AND STOWOOD BECKLEY SP51SE 2/13 Bridge and retaining walls to 18/07/63 middle moat at Beckley Park

GV II*

Bridge and retaining walls. C16 bridge; walls possibly earlier. Limestone rubble and brickwork. Stone bridge has 2 plain semi-circular arches, masonry parapets and a pitched stone pavement. Rubble wall extends around the inner side of the moat from the line of the left gable wall of Beckley Park (q.v.), to the southern corner of the moat where it returns north-eastwards for a few metres. Right of the bridge are 5 raking buttresses, and the section immediately in front of the house is raised with old brickwork. The house was built, probably by Lord Williams of Thame, in c.1540 on the triple-moated site of an early C13 lodge built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall. Square gazebo at the angle of the moat is C20. (C. Hussey, Country Life: Vol.LXV, p.406).
