Description

Upper Park Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, with a remodel around 1700. It features timber framing with brick infill, limestone rubble with brick dressings, and an old plain-tile roof with brick gable stacks. The building has a two-unit plan that has been extended to form an L-shape and consists of two storeys plus attics. The front has five windows, including a taller three-window range from the early 18th century on the left, which has enlarged 20th-century windows on the ground and first floors, along with a central dormer. The timber-framed range on the right has brick infilling in Flemish bond with flared headers. The gable wall on the right has been rebuilt with a massive brick-quoined projecting chimney. The rear wing on the right features brick quoins and possibly earlier squared blocks at the plinth level, along with a 20th-century extension in the angle of the ranges.

Inside, the farmhouse displays exposed framing, with a first-floor cross beam supported by hewn brackets, and heavy jowled posts in the end frame. The roof is a clasped-purlin type with a queen-post truss and curved windbraces. There is a dog-leg stair with heavy turned balusters leading to the attic, a very wide open fireplace, an 18th-century fireplace, and old plank doors with original ironmongery.
