Description
The gates and piers at the west end of the facade of No 44, known as Speakers' House, date from the early 19th century. They are made of iron and feature square hollow gate piers topped with spear finials. Both the gates and piers have a central scroll band. These gates and piers are part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 8 (even), Nos 14 to 36 (even) including Adam House, and Nos 40 and 44, as well as the gates and piers at Nos 48 and 50, The Old School House, and the Rectory Garden Wall. This group is further connected to Nos 5 to 39 (odd), the Drinking Fountain, the Parish Church of St Mary, and the raised pavement at the east end of Hart Street.
