Description
Ticket office and waiting room, now disused. Built around 1844, probably designed by I.K. Brunel for the Great Western Railway. The building is constructed with an ashlar stone plinth, red brick with ashlar stone dressings, and a Welsh slate roof. Two chimney stacks are present: a brick ridge stack with diagonally set flue to the right of centre, and a lateral stack with diagonally set flue to the rear.
The building follows a 3-unit plan in the Domestic Tudor style. It is a single-storey, 3-bay range where the central bay projects to both front and rear and features a higher coped roof. The entrance front has 19th-century ribbed doors with 4-centre arched surrounds positioned to the right of centre and to the left, with a wood mullion and transom window with stone surround at the centre. A wood cross-window with stone surround is located to the right. A wood canopy on decorative cast-iron brackets with fretted edging runs along all sides except the entrance front.
The platform front features 19th-century ribbed doors with 4-centre arched surrounds to the left of centre and to the right, a canted stone bay window with wood mullion and transom windows to the right of centre, and a stone slit window to the left. A George VI wall letter box is also present.
The interior has not been inspected. The building was originally constructed as "Abingdon Road Station" and was renamed "Culham Station" in 1856. A drawing is held by British Rail. This is a reputed unique survival of this station design, with few Brunel-designed stations remaining and only four originally built to this design.
