Description

The garden walls and garden house located to the southeast of Newington House are possibly from the 17th and 18th centuries. Constructed from limestone rubble and brick, with some flared headers, these walls enclose a large kitchen garden and connect to the main entrance gate. The exterior of the east and south walls features rubble; the east wall has a chequer-brick lining, while the south wall is built in irregular bond with a stepped plinth and includes a 17th-century four-centre arched stone doorway with recessed spandrels. The brick west wall is in English bond and has piers. The brick wall that flanks the forecourt of Newington House is also in irregular bond with a stepped plinth. At the southwest corner of the walled garden, there is a small brick and tiled building adorned with chequer and chevron patterning in flared headers. This building mostly dates from the late 19th to early 20th century but is likely a reconstruction of a 17th-century latrine, as a stream flows beneath it.
