Description

The garden walls to the northeast of Newington House are likely from the 17th and 18th centuries. Constructed from limestone rubble and brick, with some flared headers, these walls form the north side of the forecourt of Newington House and connect to the entrance gates. The exterior of the walls is made of rubble from the gates to the projecting brick gatepier of the stable court, which features moulded panelled sides and a stone cap with a ball finial. Although mostly rebuilt in the late 19th or early 20th century, some 17th-century elements remain. The brick lining of this section of the wall displays a chequer pattern to the east and an irregular bond with diamond patterning to the north. To the west of the brick gatepier, the wall returns towards the house in Flemish-bond brickwork and steps down in height.
