Description
Elm Tree Farmhouse is a cottage that dates from the 18th century, or possibly earlier, with some minor later alterations. It is constructed with a timber frame and has painted brick infill and rebuilding, topped with a thatched roof and a brick stack. The layout features a baffle-entry three-cell plan, with an agricultural bay on the left that is now part of the house. The building is one storey high and consists of four bays, with four wall posts visible. There is a 20th-century board door located between the right-hand windows. The windows are 20th-century wooden casements with eight panes and two lights. The roof is half-hipped on the left side, featuring a decorative ridge and a ridge stack aligned with the door.
At the rear, four wall posts are also visible. There is a projecting semi-circular bread oven made of painted brick and stone in line with the chimney, with a window on each side. Further to the right, there is a board door with a small four-pane window to its left. On the right return, the framing truss includes a tie-beam, queen posts, collar, and principal rafters. Inside, there is a large infilled fireplace, exposed framing in the cross walls, and plaster ceilings. The roof structure was not visible during the inspection in November 1989.
