Description

Alnutt's Hospital, built around 1724, is a set of almshouses located on the north side of the B4526 in Goring Heath. The structure is made of grey brick with red brick dressings and features a plain tile roof with brick stacks. It has a U-shaped plan, consisting of a central range with 13 bays and cross wings on either side. The central three bays house a chapel, which includes a central six-panel door with a segmental head and a flat hood supported by brackets. Above the door is a leaded overlight with a segmental rubbed brick head and keystone. There are segmental-headed leaded cross windows on both sides of the chapel. Each bay is adorned with Doric pilasters that support a shaped brick cornice. The gable is shaped and features a central plaque and clock, along with a lead-roofed cupola at the ridge of the cross-gable.

To the left and right of the central range are single-storey and attic sections, each with segmental-headed six-panel doors and three segmental-headed cross-windows. The roofs of these sections have hipped full dormers, and there are internal stacks at the rear. The chapel's interior includes a nave and chancel with a bow end, original pews, a pulpit with a sounding board, and an altar rail. Busts of Henry Alnutt and Richard Clement are also present.

In front of the hospital is a subsidiary wall with a central wrought iron gateway topped with an overthrow. The almshouses were founded by Henry Alnutt, who was the Lord Mayor of London, in 1724, and Richard Clement, his executor, was responsible for their construction.
