Description

This is a row of nine cottages, now numbered 9 to 16 on Malt House Lane in Dorchester. The building largely dates to the late 16th and 17th centuries, with extensions added in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The construction is a mix of timber framing with brick infill, and rendered clunch rubble with brick dressings. Roofs are covered with thatch and old plain tiles. Originally, the row consisted of single-unit cottages with rear wings. The row appears to have been originally eight cottages. Number 16, the cottage at the extreme left, was formerly two cottages and retains timber framing, featuring a three-window front. It has two plank doors and three casement windows on the ground floor, and three old three-light casement windows with some leaded lights on the first floor. The remaining cottages are narrower, with most having segmental-arched doors and casements. The parallel rear wings have hipped roofs. The cottages may have been converted from a maltings. The interior has not been inspected.
