Description

Adwell House is a house that likely dates from the early 18th century, with several alterations made over the years, including a staircase from around 1760 and a staircase dome from around 1830. There is also a billiard room added in the 19th century and some changes made in the 20th century. The exterior features lined render on brick and a slate hipped roof, with various rendered-brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and is two stories high with a five-window range, arranged as 2:1:2, with the central bay projecting forward. The entrance has glazed double doors beneath a square stone porch supported by Doric columns, with sidelights on either side flanked by pilasters added around 1960. All openings have 12-pane unhorned sashes, with the first-floor center window featuring a rendered architrave surround. A moulded rendered cornice runs along the base of the plain parapet at the eaves.

On the left side, there is a two-story, three-window range, with a tripartite sash with glazing bars on the ground floor to the left and a French window with an overlight to the right. The rear of the house has two stories and an attic with a nine-window range, featuring a sash door to the right of center and 12-pane unhorned sashes throughout, except for the tripartite sashes with glazing bars located on the ground and first floors to the right and to the left of center. Flat-roofed dormers are present in the attic.

Inside, there is a stone open-well staircase located in an apse-ended hall, featuring an early 19th-century cast-iron balustrade, an acanthus frieze, shallow ribbed half-domes at the apse ends, and a glazed dome above the center with a plaster floral moulding in the vault. Most ground floor rooms have late 18th-century fireplaces. The billiard room, added in the 19th century, is located to the right of the entrance front and is a single-story building with a six-window range, featuring lined render on brick and a hipped slate roof. All openings have 12-pane sashes, except for a sash door on the left.
