Description

Burdens is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century. It has a timber frame with red brick infill panels set on a flint plinth, and an old tile roof that features a catslide to the east over an integral outshut. The building has a three-room plan aligned from north to south, with a continuous outshut to the east.

The east elevation showcases a deep catslide roof above a short wall with exposed studs and brick infill panels, all resting on a flint plinth that is deeper to the north. There is a six-pane window at the north end. The west elevation features a full-height wall with timber framing and brick infill panels, also on a flint plinth that is deeper to the north. A central 20th-century porch and two dormers are located at the south end. The panels between the framing have 19th and 20th-century casements inserted. The north elevation includes a central stack with a chimney breast that flares at the base, jowelled wall posts, straight braces to the wall plate, and a pair of raking struts to the purlins. The south elevation mirrors the north with a central stack and flared chimney breast, jowelled wall posts, and straight braces to the end plate, along with two small windows in the brick infill and a six-pane window in the outshut.

Inside, the main room at the lower north end features an open brick fireplace with a timber lintel. The northern and central rooms have boxed beams and joists. A staircase at the rear of the south end has a plank door and exposed wall framing. The first floor contains three rooms with exposed wall plates, down braces, and studs, along with a plank door. The roof is not visible above collar level.
