Description
Creeper Cottage is a small house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins, and has a thatched roof with brick gable stacks. The original plan comprised two units.
The front of the house has three windows. A small two-light window with a wooden diamond mullion sits above a 20th-century thatched canopy, to the right of the centre. To the right and left are 18th-century three-light casement windows, with the ground-floor windows having chamfered lintels. A blocked doorway, likely from the 19th century, is located to the extreme left, and there is another doorway in the left gable wall, possibly original, next to the stack. The rear elevation contains further small wood-mullion windows of two and three lights, one featuring diamond intermediate bars.
Inside, you will find heavy beams with concave chamfer stops, two open fireplaces – one with similar stops and the other probably 18th century – and a central jowled post. The roof is a two-bay, clasped-purlin structure, with an original doorway through a framed truss.
