Description

Starbank House is a townhouse, now used as a house and offices. It was originally built in the early 18th century and was refronted in the early 19th century, with alterations carried out in the mid-20th century. The exterior is lined render over brick, with a flat roof which is not visible, and a slate roof to the rear slope. It has various brick and rendered brick stacks. The building is three storeys high and has a three-window front. The central doorway has a six-panel door surrounded by an incised square Greek Doric column surround, supporting a cornice. There are 16-pane sash windows to the left and right of the entrance, with pilaster-strip surrounds and cornices on brackets. The first floor has three 12-pane sash windows with architrave surrounds and cornices on brackets. The second floor has three 6-pane sash windows with architrave surrounds. A cornice sits below a plain parapet. The left return has three storeys and two windows. There are 12-pane sash windows with architrave surrounds to the ground and first floor on the right, a blind recessed panel with an architrave surround to the first floor on the left, a 6-pane sash window with an architrave surround to the second floor on the right, and a blind recessed round panel with an architrave surround to the second floor on the left. The interior includes a likely mid-18th century open-well staircase, with a baluster balustrade to the rear centre, running from the ground to the first floor, which is reputedly from Rycote House. There is fielded panelling in the entrance hall, and early 19th century fireplaces in some rooms. The third floor was altered in the mid-20th century. A drawing held by the Bodleian Library shows the building's front prior to the 19th-century remodelling.
