Description

St. Michael's House is a Grade II* listed building located on the north side of High Street in Wallingford. This house, which is now used as an office and flats, dates from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations in the 19th century.

The exterior features a painted rendered shaped plinth and lined render, likely on brick, with rendered chamfered quoins at the ends. It has an old plain-tile roof with a rendered brick end stack on the left and a ridge stack to the right of the center. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has a seven-window range.

The central entrance consists of a four-panel double door with an overlight that has diagonal glazing bars. This entrance is framed by a surround of Doric half-columns that support a triangular pediment. The ground floor windows are 16-pane horned sashes, with the bottom sash consisting of two panes. There is a flat rendered band between the ground and first floor. The first floor also features 16-pane horned sashes, with the bottom sash of two panes, except for the blind recessed panels on the left and right of the center. A painted deep moulded wood cornice with modillion brackets adorns the eaves. The building has four pedimented full dormers, each with horizontal sashes that include glazing bars.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest.
