Description
Numbers 3-8 River View is a terrace of six cottages dating to around 1825, built in Sandford-on-Thames on Church Road. The cottages are constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with corrugated sheet roofs and brick ridge stacks. They have a double-depth plan, arranged over two storeys, with two-window fronts. Each cottage has a central plank door flanked by three-light casement windows at ground and first floor level, all set within segmental arches. The roofs have a 10-degree pitch and boxed eaves. A four-flue brick stack is located between each pair of cottages. The cottages were built to house workers from the nearby paper mill owned by James Swann. Originally, the roofs were covered in tarred paper, in accordance with the ideas of J.C. Loudon as detailed in his 1811 pamphlet "Account of the Paper Roofs used at Tew Lodge, Oxon," in which Swann is mentioned as being familiar with paper roofing. The roof trusses were constructed precisely to Loudon's specifications. This terrace is the only known surviving building erected to Loudon’s paper roof specifications.
