Description

Warren Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from around 1600 and 1700, with extensions made in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble, featuring some timber lintels, and has an old plain-tile roof with brick stacks. The building has a three-unit plan that has been extended to form an L-shape and stands two storeys high with attics.

The front of the farmhouse has five windows and a central door that is sheltered by a glazed porch. To the right of the door, there is a blocked doorway. The windows to the right of the door and above it are three-light wood-framed mullioned and transomed windows, all with stone flat arches. To the left of the door, there is a straight joist, followed by a two-window range that was added later. This range has a central flat-arched doorway that has been converted into a window, along with irregular two-light casements and a four-light casement at the far left. The hipped roof features diagonal-shafted stacks at the left end and along the ridge of the original range.

The right end of the farmhouse returns to a rear wing, which shows signs of a four-window arrangement that is mostly blocked but still contains remnants of one wood-framed cross window. The rear of the wing has a leaded cross window and another diagonal-shafted stack. At the angle of the ranges, there is a stair tower that includes a leaded cross window and a four-light casement with wooden diagonal mullions. An outshut at the back of the added range has a similar wood-mullioned window, likely re-used.

Inside, there is a large internal stack featuring a Tudor-arched fireplace on the first floor. The rear wing contains a bolection-moulded panelled room with a heavy cornice and a Tudor-arched corner fireplace beneath a panelled overmantel, which has a bayleaf surround on the central panel and is flanked by panels carved with fruit, flowers, and acorns. The room above has a bolection-moulded corner fireplace with a panelled overmantel that includes a contemporary oil painting. A dogleg stair with winders leads up to the attics, and the roofs are supported by butt-purlins with cambered collars.
