Description
The Sue Ryder Home, lodge, and entrance gates were built in 1904 by C.E. Mallows for Robert Fleming. The lodge is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof and a brick and stone stack. It has a square plan with angled corners and is designed in the Beaux Arts style. The single-storey building has a three-bay range, with a central six-panel door set in a semi-circular recess, framed by a stone architrave and cornice supported by brackets. On either side of the door are nine-pane sash windows, also with stone architraves and cornices. The building has stone quoins at both ends and angled stone corners that include an oval wreathed window. An entablature runs along the eaves, and the pyramidal roof has an apex stack made of brick with stone coping, featuring niches on each side. The left and right returns have three nine-pane sashes with similar stone architraves and cornices, bracketed at the center with Doric columns in between. The interior has not been inspected. The attached entrance gates consist of pierced iron piers with decorative central gates and pedestrian gates on either side. There is also an ornamental stone pier with brick quoins and an oval wreathed opening at one end.
