Description
Ellwood House is a farmhouse dating from the mid-16th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of red brick featuring some random flared headers and has an old plain-tile roof that is gable-ended to the left. The building is two stories high and has a six-window range. There are plank doors with glazed tops located to the left and right of the center. To the right, there is a three-light painted stone ovolo-moulded mullion window with a hood mould, while to the left and right of the center are two-light painted stone ovolo-moulded mullion windows. The center features a four-light wood mullion and transom window. To the left, there are two two-light casements with top-lights and segmental brick heads, along with a two-light casement with a top-light on the first floor to the left. The first floor center has another four-light wood mullion and transom window, and to the right of center is a two-light painted stone ovolo-moulded mullion window, followed by a three-light painted stone ovolo-moulded mullion window to the right.
On the right return, there is a two-storey angled bay made of brick with some random uncoursed stone rubble on the ground floor, topped with a plain-tile hipped roof. A 20th-century French window with side-lights is located on the ground floor, and there is a round window on each side of the bay on the first floor. The rear features a catslide roof with a cross-gable to the right, made of roughcast timber framing. Lateral stacks with three diagonally-set flues are positioned to the left and right of center. The interior has not been inspected but is reputed to have richly moulded ceiling beams. Historically, Thomas Ellwood, a Quaker and friend of John Milton, was born here in 1639.
