Description

This is an early 18th-century house with additions dating to the 19th century, located on the west side of Watery Lane in Clifton Hampden. The house is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with flared brick headers, and has a Welsh slate hipped roof and brick end stacks. It is three storeys high, with a six-window front. A glazed front door, topped with a fanlight and surrounded by a wooden Doric pillar, sits centrally, supporting an open triangular pediment. Single-light leaded transom windows are positioned to the left and right of the centre doorway, each set within a segmental brick head and featuring a keystone. The original windows are wooden cross-windows, mostly with leaded lights, also set within segmental brick heads and keystones. A flat stone band runs between the ground and first floors, and another between the first and second floors. Second-floor windows are two-light leaded wood casements with segmental brick heads and keystones, topped with a stone band to the eaves. The rear elevation has similar window detailing.

Inside, a dog-leg staircase rises from the ground floor to the second floor, featuring a balustrade with turned acorn finials to the handrail. Fielded panelling is present in the entrance hall and sitting room on the left-hand side. Numerous original 18th-century panelled doors are found throughout the interior. A 19th-century addition to the right is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a Welsh slate lean-to roof. This two-storey section has a single window and wooden cross-windows on both the ground and first floors.
