Description

Farmhouse. Dating from the mid-17th century, it was later encased in brick and altered in the early 18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern with grey brick headers. It has an old plain-tile roof and a brick ridge stack to the left of the centre. Originally, the building comprised three rooms arranged in a lobby-entry plan. The rear elevation has a 5-window range. A double part-glazed door is situated to the right of the centre, featuring a fluted Doric pilaster surround, a frieze with alternating triglyphs and carved cows' heads, and a pedimented hood supported by carved brackets. The windows to the right, centre, and left are tripartite sashes with glazing bars and cambered, rubbed brick heads; the window to the left functions as a French window with two panels at the base. A blocked doorway is located to the left of the centre. A moulded brick band runs between the ground and first floors. The first-floor windows are also tripartite sashes with glazing bars and rubbed brick heads, with a blind panel to the right of the centre and a 16-pane sash to the left of the centre. A richly moulded brick cornice is present at the eaves. Inside, a dog-leg staircase has three twisted balusters to each tread. A room on the ground floor to the left features fielded panelling, a half-domed niche to the left of the fireplace—which has shaped shelves—and winged angle-heads to the spandrels, flanked by pilasters. A basket-arched recess to the right of the fireplace continues into the room at the centre and was likely a former entrance. A lean-to addition is present on the left return.
