Description
90 High Street is a house and shop dating from the early 17th century, with a refronting that occurred in the 18th to 19th centuries. The building is four stories high, constructed with stuccoed timber framing and includes cellars. It features a moulded eaves cornice, a parapet, a Welsh slate roof, and brick stacks. Two bay windows with three-light sash windows extend through the upper floors. On the ground floor, each side of the shop has a door in a reeded frame, flanked by engaged Doric columns. The shopfront dates from the late 19th century. The roof is not visible.
Inside, there is a blocked original doorway and a partly renewed staircase. The interior also boasts a plaster ceiling with moulded ornamented beams, original panelling, fireplaces, and overmantels. At the back, there is an addition, now a lecture room for University College, built around 1812 by cabinet maker James Adam, which features two Venetian windows.
The building was constructed in 1612 by John Williams, an apothecary, and was refronted by James Adam, likely in the early 19th century. In 1905, it was acquired by University College, where it served as lodging for the mother of John Ruskin during his time at Christ Church from 1836 to 1840. All the listed buildings on the south side of High Street form a group.
