Description
The K6 telephone kiosk, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is a standardised structure made of cast iron sections that are bolted together. It is painted red overall and features long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with crowns applied to the top panels rather than being perforated. There are rectangular white display signs reading 'TELEPHONE' beneath the shallow curved roof.
While there are some signs of paint flaking on the front face, the kiosk remains intact and is generally in good condition, retaining all its glazing panels. It is not in operational use, and the internal telephone equipment has been removed.
The kiosk is located on the south side of Market Street, east of the service entrance to the Grade II-listed Covered Market. On the opposite side of the road are the south ranges of the Inner Quadrangle and First Quadrangle of Jesus College, both listed at Grade I. The telephone kiosk has a strong visual relationship with these three listed buildings.
