Description
The K6 telephone kiosk, designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, is a notable example of a standardised design made of cast iron and painted red overall. It features long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, with crowns on the top panels that are applied rather than perforated. There are rectangular white display signs reading "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow curved roof. The kiosk has been modernised internally, and the original display sign windows have been replaced; the two side windows now have opaque white glazing, while the front window has been painted black.
This kiosk is located on rising ground at the south-west corner of Airton village green, positioned against the garden wall of the listed Vipoint House and Airton Cottage, which was formerly the village post office. It has a strong visual relationship with these buildings and stands in close proximity to the listed The Manor House, approximately 21 meters to the north-west, and The Green, about 50 meters to the north. The telephone kiosk is visually connected to these three listed buildings as a group.
