The Black Horse Inn The Cottage

ST CLEMENT'S STREET 1. 1485 (South Side) No 102 (The Black Horse Inn) No 1O2A (The Cottage) SP 5205 19/497 12.1.54. II 2. RCHM 248. Early C17. North elevation is 2-storeyed roughcast rubble with cellars, a tiled pent, cornice at the 1st floor and a boxed-out bar-front on a brick base. A modern tile roof and brick stacks. There are 4 gables, the two on the East being tile-hung with modern 4-light casement windows and the two on the West with C18 2-light casements. The East end of the lst floor has modern 4-light casements and the West end a double C18-C19 sash window. Between the house and the road are old cobble setts in what is now an unfenced forecourt with trees. At the back on South are modern brick additions against 2 gables of the original house which also has a C17 staircase projection here. The whole house has recently been repaired and part remodelled. The stabling has been removed at the back. Interior: RCHM p 184 a. Includes an original stone fireplace and some panelled doors which were said to be still there in 1949. To the West is "The Cottage" (No 102A) which is possibly C18 and built against the inn. It is a l-storeyed building with a gabled attic dormer, a Welsh slate roof and a boxed-out splayed C18 style sash window on a brick base.
