Description
37 and 39 Cowley Road are two 17th century cottages that have been refaced in the 18th century. The building is two stories tall and constructed of ashlar, topped with a modern brown tiled roof featuring two ancient gabled attic dormers. A modern red brick chimney stack is located at the west end on a moulded stone base, while another modern red brick stack is at the east end. The ground and first floors each have two 3-light 18th century sash windows with stone keystoned architraves. The attic window in the west dormer retains its original moulded 18th century wood frame. In front of number 39, there is a one-story red brick shop that extends outward. Inside, the building includes an original stone fireplace and a door frame. Notably, the first-floor south room of number 37 features a 17th century wall painting in a Gothic painted frame, which was discovered in 1953.
