Description

The Bodleian Library and Schools Quadrangle, which includes the Divinity School and the Convocation House, is a Grade I listed building located in Radcliffe Square. The Divinity School was constructed between 1424 and 1490, with Richard Winchcombe serving as the master-mason in 1429 and Thomas Elkyn in 1439. The notable fan-vaulting was completed from 1480 to 1483 under master-mason William Orchard. The North doorway was added by William Byrd in 1669, and the upper storey, known as Duke Humphrey's Library, was completed by 1489. The building underwent restoration and alterations from 1598 to 1602, with further partial restoration using Headington stone in 1660 and repairs in 1701-1702.

The Schools Quadrangle features a West range built from 1610 to 1612, which houses the Arts End of the library on the upper storey and the Proscholium on the ground floor. The remaining three ranges were constructed from 1613 to 1624, with John Akroyd and John and Michael Bently as master-masons. Originally built in Headington freestone, extensive restorations took place from 1878 to 1885 using Clipsham stone for the upper storey, pinnacles, and the entire tower of the Five Orders. Additional refacing of the interior of the quadrangle on the South side was completed in 1949.

The West cross-wing was built between 1634 and 1636, with its West window rebuilt in 1877. The upper storey serves as the Selden End of the library, while the lower storey contains the Convocation House and the Chancellor's Court. All the buildings in Radcliffe Square are of the highest importance, forming the center of the University of Oxford.
