Description
The Museum of the History of Science, also known as The Old Ashmolean Building, was built between 1679 and 1683 by the University of Oxford, with Thomas Wood as the master mason and Arthur Frogley as the master carpenter. The building is constructed from Headington stone, which was later patched with Clipsham stone and artificially toned down between 1928 and 1930. It features two storeys and a basement, with five windows that include two-light mullion and transom windows, each having alternate triangular and semi-circular pedimented heads. There is a pedimented doorway, and balustraded steps with a parapet were added in 1957. The building is part of a group that includes Exeter College, The Sheldonian Theatre, and The Old Clarendon Building, along with The Indian Institute on Catte Street.
