Description
Lincoln College Library, formerly known as the Church of St Martin and All Saints, is a Grade I listed building located on the north side of High Street. Originally a parish church, it was rebuilt between 1707 and 1708 using Headington stone, following a Palladian design by Dean Henry Aldrich. The building underwent restoration in 1866, with the spire being rebuilt in Bath stone in 1874. The south front and tower, made of Portland stone, were restored in 1888, and the north front was restored in 1906 by H W Moore. Additionally, the interior was refitted in 1896 by Sir Thomas Jackson. The library contains monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries and is recognized as a significant early example of Palladian architecture, distinct from the London style of Burlington and Kent. The listed buildings on the north side form a group value context.
