Description
No 118 on High Street is a house and shop, likely originating from the 16th century, with a three-storey refronting from the 19th century. The exterior features stuccoed timber-framing, a moulded eaves cornice, and a parapet. The building has cellars, and the first and second floors each have two-light windows with casements below the transoms. The upper lights above the transoms have semi-circular heads, all set in moulded wood frames with cornices. The western window on the first floor is a projecting bay with three lights. At the back, there are two cement-faced gables that may date back to the original house. Inside, there is some 17th-century panelling on the ground and first floors, which was discovered in 1970, hiding a fine late 16th-century wall painting in the rear upper room. There is also a 16th-century fireplace on the ground floor. The building underwent extensive restoration between 1970 and 1971, including a new shopfront. All the listed buildings on the south side form a group.
