Description

East House is a large house dating from around 1770, originally built for the Duke of Buccleuch's agent. The building was likely altered and extended in the early to mid-19th century, and further extended and partly subdivided into flats for the elderly in the late 20th century. It is constructed of Marlstone ashlar with Stonesfield-slate and artificial stone-slate roofs, and features ashlar stacks. The house has an L-shaped plan with a secondary range. The main facade has two storeys and an attic and comprises six windows, punctuated by a plinth, sill bands, and a moulded stone cornice which steps back slightly over two bays to the right. The windows are 12-pane sashes, taller on the ground floor. An arched entrance, located immediately to the right of the recess, is sheltered by a 19th-century stone canopy supported by Tuscan columns. The hipped roof is punctuated by 19th-century triangular dormers. A large canted bay window is located on the left end of the wall, situated below a pair of 4-pane sashes with flush limestone architraves and double-stepped keyblocks. The left face of the rear wing has similar windows, above a tripartite sash, while the rear wall of the wing also features a tripartite sash above a further bay window. A secondary, single-storey wing returns from the right end of the main range. The interior is largely 20th-century, with the exception of the drawing room, which retains a painted plaster frieze. Later 20th-century extensions to the rear are not of architectural note.
