Description

The Old Rectory is a former rectory built around 1743 for the rector of Begbroke and vicar of Yarnton, reportedly modeled after Yarnton Vicarage. The building has late 18th century additions to the north and alterations from around 1875 to the south. It is constructed of mostly coursed rubble with a stone slate roof featuring hips, gables, and tall brick stacks. The irregular road front has five bays and is two storeys high. The right-hand bay has a gable end with a stack, followed by a pointed arch entrance that features a 20th-century timber door and fanlight. The windows are mostly sash style, with an 18th-century leaded casement in the central recessed bay on the first floor. The north return has re-set 18th-century casements, while the south return features three gables and 1875 four-pane sashes. The garden front includes a left-hand gabled bay with similar sashes, a central entrance from around 1743 with a part-glazed panelled door, and a lead-glazed two-light casement on the first floor. To the right, there is an extension with leaded two-light casements and a catslide roof with a gabled dormer.

Inside, notable features include the "Great Parlour" from 1743, which is a panelled room with a chamfered and stopped spine beam, a moulded chimneypiece flanked by cupboards with double plain-panelled doors, and an original moulded cornice with shutters. The doors have H and HL hinges. The northern late 18th-century extension has a stone flagged floor and original doors with H hinges. Features from 1875 include a staircase with a turned newel and chamfered balusters in a hall with red and white quarry tiles, as well as chimneypieces and some chamfered Gothick panels beneath the windows.
